THE LIGHT QUALITY MODEL

To realize luminous environments that achieving the desired impact lighting effects need to be orchestrated. The light quality diagram is a tool to define key aspects for realisation. The model consists of three layers: source of light, shaping of light and integration in space. Single rooms or situations within a room are represented as shaded areas with key qualities positioned inside these areas. The location within the layers tell about how this key qualities are realized.

To illustrate the use of the scheme two light expressions within a test bathroom are described.

The light quality model is adapted from the light expressions model presented in the paper:

Bathroom moments – light and water as intimate experiences. Reisinger, M., Design & Emotion Conference, Hong Kong, 2008.
